Radio Frequency (RF)
Radiofrequency (RF) treatment is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses radiofrequency energy (a type of electromagnetic wave) to heat the deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface. It is primarily used for skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, and improving skin texture rather than removing large amounts of fat.

How it works
A handheld device delivers radiofrequency energy into the skin. The energy generates heat in the dermis (the skin’s deeper layer) and, in some treatments, the layer of fat just beneath the skin.
The heat causes two main effects:
- Immediate collagen contraction
- Existing collagen fibers contract, which can produce a mild tightening effect soon after treatment.
- Long-term collagen production
- The controlled heating stimulates skin cells called fibroblasts.
- Fibroblasts produce new collagen and elastin over the following weeks and months.
- This gradually improves skin firmness and elasticity.
Can RF reduce fat?
Some RF devices are specifically designed to heat fat tissue to temperatures that can damage fat cells.
When used for body contouring:
- Fat cells are heated.
- Some fat cells are damaged and gradually cleared by the body’s immune system.
- The reduction in fat is generally modest.
Most RF treatments, however, are aimed at skin tightening, with fat reduction being a secondary benefit.
What areas can be treated?
Face
- Forehead
- Around the eyes
- Cheeks
- Jawline
- Neck
Body
- Abdomen
- Upper arms
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Knees
What results can you expect?
Many people notice:
- Firmer skin
- Improved skin texture
- Softening of fine lines
- Better facial contours
- Mild reduction in skin laxity
If used on the body, some people also see:
- Slight reduction in body circumference
- Smoother appearance of cellulite
- Mild improvement in skin tightening after weight loss or pregnancy
Results usually develop gradually over 2–6 months as new collagen forms.
Is it permanent?
No. RF does not stop the natural ageing process. If maintained it can reduced the wrinkles and fine lines.
The collagen produced during treatment can last for months to a few years, but:
- Skin continues to age.
- Maintenance treatments are often recommended every 6–18 months, depending on the device and individual.
Is it safe?
Radiofrequency treatment is generally considered safe when performed correctly.
Temporary side effects include:
- Warmth
- Redness
- Mild swelling
- Tenderness
Rare complications include:
- Uneven results
- Burns
- Blistering
- Changes in skin pigmentation
